Virtues and Flaws

“In this theme I try to deconstruct Baroque lines and outward Baroque beauty. The wildly modelled sculptures are wrapped in a cracked porcelain crust that expresses the depth and pain of today while reaching back into the depths of the past. For me the process is a metaphor for life itself. During firing the porcelain crust sinks and floats in the molten glaze as if in living magma. Beneath the cracked surface new, distinctive microcosms come into being.”

The base is chamotte clay. After modelling, a thick layer of metallic glaze is applied, followed by a first firing at 1340 °C. The form is then wrapped in liquid Limoges casting porcelain. During the second firing at 1340 °C the outer porcelain layer shrinks and cracks while the glaze beneath it melts. The result is an organic structure that responds sensitively to changes in light.
